Borehole Geothermal Systems

Drilling  boreholes for geothermal energy is the most difficult part of the Geothermal System installation, mainly because the topography and geology of Scotland’s west coast is as complex as anywhere in the world, therefore selecting and carrying out the drilling process to suit the geological and site conditions is as important as selecting the correct GSHP. Argyll Geothermal has the equipment, the skills and the experience to deliver a  complete drilling service for the geothermal market.

Closed Loop systems circulate a water-based solution through a small diameter "loop" underground pipes in boreholes usually 40 – 100m in depth, The loop is surrounded with thermally enhanced borehole grouting products designed to maximise the borehole efficiency. In cold weather heat is absorbed from the earth and transferred to the GSHP unit. The GSHP unit amplifies the heat and delivers it indoors. In warm weather the process is reversed, and excess heat is carried from indoors and into the earth.

Open Loop systems utilise groundwater from a well as a direct energy source. Simply run the groundwater via a borehole pump through the GSHP unit.

Geothermal and Energy Piles

In addition to the original geothermal system where geothermal wells are used for heating only, a newer system is now available to incorporate building foundations – piles- as well as geothermal heating.

The use of geothermal energy techniques integrated in structural pile foundations has the capability of being an efficient and cost effective solution in domestic and commercial building projects. Generally known as structural energy piles, these systems use plastic piping transfer heat from the ground to the building. Since the temperature within the ground remains relatively constant, the circulating water maintains a constant temperature throughout the year, providing a safe, energy efficient and reliable heating system.

Effectively, geothermal piles will reduce the need for traditional sources of heating and cooling and will bring the idea of carbon-neutral buildings closer to reality
